Hear, hear!

The latest astronaut (of about twenty) to speak out.  John Glenn to NASA: Keep shuttles flying.

 A few choice quotes:

"The U.S. for the first time since the beginning of the Space Age will have no way to launch anyone into space - starting next January.

"Our astronauts will have to be launched in Russian spacecraft, from a Russian base in Kazakhstan, to go to ... International Space Station.

"Starting at the end of this year, and probably for the next five to ten years, the launches of U.S. astronauts into space will be viewed in classrooms and homes in America only through the courtesy of Russian TV.

"For the 'world's greatest spacefaring nation,' that is hard to accept."

     and

"We'll spend almost as much buying our astronauts seats on Russia's Soyuz as we would to keep the shuttles flying," Glenn said. "The cost of continuing shuttle is really very tiny compared to the $100 billion investment we've made in the station, and keeping shuttle flying, we'll have the biggest spaceship ever to carry seven [astronauts] and tons of cargo."

       and

"We're putting ourselves in line for a single-point failure ending the whole manned space program, and I don't think we should be putting ourselves into that position."

The abandonment of our space program has become the biggest, largely unnoticed catastrophes of our day and age. I am in my early 20's and have always reveled in the idea that above me is a vast unexplored mystery waiting for man to reach out and find our place. I have always wanted to see our space program carry a fellow human being into the great unknown of space, to feel the thunder, to hear the roar, to know that man, as frail and as weak as he is has brought himself to the point were he can survive even in an environment so alien to his own. If things continue the way they are now I may never see the launch of the proud American space shuttle, or know that even with the discord and pointless fighting that goes on in our country we can still band together to explore the unknown. It truly saddens me to think that all of that futile argument has finally destroyed one of the things that makes our country truly great What will happen to the generation of Americans that grow up without a Space Program? For the sake of America and for the sake of the Scientific Spirit I hope that the American People will see what a travesty this is and realize that it is up to them to bring back our dreams.
